clean POWER

PLANNING

Television Drama & Feature Film

DID YOU KNOW?

Just 17% of mobile power generators used within Film & TV, analysed by the Fuel Project in 2024, reached half their load capacity, with the average peak load being recorded at only 23kW.

This means that unit bases, locations, catering to lighting, can use clean technology to save money, emissions and end industry fossil reliance.

INTRODUCTION TO POWER PLANNING

Power planning is about efficiency and saving money and emissions by working with smarter, more innovative tech to deliver the best power solutions for each production.

We will support your production and sustainability teams to design and implement safe, efficient power plans. Our approach is to create the easiest transition away from inefficient, polluting generator use, while delivering fuel savings and a positive impact on crew health.

Pre-Production

Propose and implement a safe power plan with each department across all locations.

  • Ahead of the tech-recce, assess energy needs at department level

  • Attend tech-recce, confirm the most sustainable power systems

  • Agree battery & EV recharge and power monitoring plans

Key STEPS

Power planning for a TV drama or feature film consists of three phases: pre-production, on set and post-production. Opportunities are often missed because of a lack of expertise, market awareness, time or financial pressures. Shared goals and a singular role with the responsibility for managing power can mean real success for your production.

On Set

Monitor & measure power consumption by department, while actively managing energy efficiency

  • Prioritise grid and local power opportunities

  • Real-time power monitoring at department level

  • Ongoing assessment of power usage to ensure efficiencies throughout filming

Post-Production

Report cost and emissions savings in a clear and meaningful way, to inform your future productions

  • Working in collaboration with your on-set or in-house sustainability team

  • Use our learnings and successes to create case study

  • Share knowledge to support industry transition (with IP considered)

harness our knowledge & DECARBONISE your PRODUCTION

Close-up portrait of Steve Knight, a smiling man with short hair and a beard, wearing a dark button-up shirt, against a blurred dark background.

Steve works with Film & TV productions, broadcasters, studios and screen organisations to help plan and implement practical lower-emission power solutions. This work includes clean power planning, hybrid and battery system integration, fuel transition strategies, grid connections, infrastructure planning and operational optimisation, helping productions move away from fossil-fuelled generators in a way that works operationally and commercially.

Before moving into consultancy, Steve spent more than two decades in the Film & TV equipment rental sector, most recently as Managing Director of Pixipixel, supplying camera, lighting and power equipment to film, television, commercial and broadcast productions. The business was an early adopter of lower-emission technologies including HVO fuel, battery storage and hybrid power systems.

His background combines operational delivery, commercial growth and hands-on technical knowledge of lighting and power systems, giving him a practical understanding of how productions operate on the ground.

Steve also delivers clean power training, both in person and online, helping production teams, screen organisations and suppliers understand the technologies available, how to implement them and how they integrate into production. Steve has delivered training and contributed to industry programmes with Sky, Film London, Warner Bros., BECTU Vision, Media Cymru and Screen Cornwall, as well as appearing as a guest panellist for BAFTA Albert webinars.

If you’re looking to implement clean power on set, train your teams or bring new energy solutions into the Film & TV market, feel free to contact Steve.
